About Local Pianist & Teacher Florence Phillips

An Experienced Teacher

A lifelong pianist and musician, I’ve worked with numerous instructors and professional musicians in the greater Philadelphia area. I studied piano and pedagogy during my undergrad and grad school years, and I’ve worked as a soloist, collaborative pianist (with singers and instrumentalists, and church musician for the past decade.

I have a significant amount of experience working with both adults and children, and whether you are a retired individual looking to start out at the keyboard, a young professional picking up lessons again, or have a child that you’d like to gift a lifetime of music-making, I’d love to hear from you.

Piano Lessons For Kids in Downingtown, PA

I started taking piano lessons at a young age, and I know how much joy and confidence music can give a child. I’ll help your child learn the fundamentals like proper technique, the ability to read notes fluently, how to play by ear, and how to understand music theory, and my goal is always to help them become an independent pianist who loves music – I don’t want kids to practice simply because they have to.

Of course, I also incorporate activities that make lessons fun. Children learn better when they are mentally engaged, and the last thing I want to do is burden them with another school-like activity. We’ll balance fun with serious instruction, and your child will grow into a competent, fulfilled musician.

Adult Piano Lessons in the Downingtown Area

Adults bring a unique set of goals and challenges to the piano, and I try to work with students on a case-by-case basis. There’s no agenda in my studio, and your goals are my goals. If you are struggling with tension because of the hours you spend in front of a computer, we’ll work on that. If you want to be able to sight read, we’ll work on that. If you have a favorite piece or genre that you’ve been hoping to work on, let me know! I want you to love the piano and music, and we can create a personal learning plan for you.

The Materials I Use

For beginning students I like to incorporate the Faber Piano Adventures method and the Helen Marlais Succeeding At The Piano method. We don’t rely solely on method books though – I bring other materials and exercises into the picture. Also, I supply my students with method books when they enroll – you’re welcome to purchase your own materials at any time of course, but you won’t have to buy method books or anything to get started.

What Do You Need To Get Started With Downingtown Piano Lessons?

I do ask that my students have a piano or keyboard at home, and that’s because you won’t see any progress if you don’t practice. I’ll teach you everything you need to know and create a roadmap for you, but it’s up to you to spend time with your lesson materials at home. I’m not picky about which piano or digital keyboard you have, but it’s best if you have something with a pedal, weighted keys, and preferably a full-size 88 key keyboard. If you would like more information, you can read my guide on where to buy a piano in the West Chester area.

Regarding lesson materials, I do provide books and methods for beginning students, so you don’t actually have to bring anything (unless you have music or method books that you’d like to use!).
